Staff reporter Conor Dougherty spoke with Aaardvark’s owner Joe Stromei about the LA landmark.
“I started off selling collectibles at a flea market. Then I brought some clothes from Arizona, where my mother lived, to give to some of the other vendors. But they never showed up, and so I figured I’d sell them. That day I made my quota by 10 in the morning, and usually I’d be there until 5 p.m.
I finished school, I got various jobs and found having a job very confining, so I opened my first store in February 1972 in Hermosa Beach. In March of that year I opened my second store on Melrose Ave, and in June I opened a store in Silver Lake.
“We buy our clothing from organized charities (that receive it as part of donations) and from exporters. Today it’s more from clothing exporters, since the charities have started opening their own second-hand retail businesses.
I wanted to get at the front of the phone book. I had a 1939 truck that I called the ‘odd ark,’ but I was looking for names that started with ‘A.’ One morning I was looking down at the dictionary and there it was — Aardvark. I spell it with three ‘A’s’ to improve upon its position in the phone book.
